The Dubuque Regional Humane Society is one of just 50 shelters in the entire country that is competing in the ASPCA $100K Challenge to SAVE MORE LIVES.

Competing shelters have to save at least 300 more animals in August, September & October over the same period last year......the shelter that goes the farthest over 300 more lives saved wins the $100,000 grant.

The American Red Cross in Dubuque is seeking administrative volunteers to assist locally. This team would be responsible for general office work, support to accounting, and data entry. The Sinsinawa Book & Gift Gallery will feature the 5th annual Sinsinawa Mound Heritage Exhibit through Aug. 8. Sister Priscilla Wood, director of the Office of Arts and Cultural Heritage, has compiled an eclectic mix of pieces from the Sinsinawa Heritage Collection that have not been previously displayed in the gallery. Borders is hosting a book drive from July 20-August 31 to benefit the Carnegie Stout Public Library's Summer Reading program. They are collecting new children's paperback books purchased by customers. Visit Borders bookstore in the mall and ask how you can help get books into the hands of children.

August 3

The Bellevue Community Center is having a blood drive conducted by the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center on August 3rd, from 2:30 to 6:00. They are the sole provider of blood to Mercy and Finley in Dubuque, Jackson Co Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, and Mercy Medical Center in Clinton. They also supply blood to the University of Iowa Hospital. Just about everywhere patients were sent on July 4th. If you want to donate, let me know. They said to plan on 45 minutes for the procedure.

Carnegie-Stout Public Library's adult graphic novel discussion group will meet at 7pm on Tuesday, August 3, to discuss Scott Pilgrim's "Precious Little Life", the first volume of Bryan Lee O'Malley critically-acclaimed series. Suzanne Wade, the Upper and Lower Rock River Basin Educator, will lead the group with information on planning a new rain garden and how to keep it growing strong all year long. The evening will also include a site visit to the newly installed rain garden at Beloit City Hall.

On Saturday August 21, the Knights of Columbus Council 510 will host a Prime Rib Dinner CATERED BY POORMAN'S at the K.C. Hall 781 Locust St. Cocktails are at 5:30 with dinner at 6:30pm. Cost is only $12.00 and includes dessert. Proceeds are used to support the "Centennial Cross" (the 75 foot high, blue lighted Cross) south of Dubuque.
